Safety
We require that you not allow your kitten to go outside or run freely because of potentially fatal feline diseases. In addition, we want to keep the kitten safe from other potential hazards such as automobiles, predators, cruel humans, fleas and other parasites, etc.
Check for the following safety hazards:
Accessible garbage - splintered bones can perforate the stomach or intestine or form an intestinal blockage and rubber bands can wrap around the intestines if swallowed. Styrofoam packing "peanuts" may cause an intestinal blockage.Cellophane turns glassy in the stomach when ingested and can cause internal lacerationsChristmas tree needles, tinsel, and decorations could perforate the stomach or intestine or form an intestinal blockage.Poisonous Plants (open link for a list common hazardous plants) Needles, threads, staples; craft materials are small and easily swallowedPlastic bags and wrap could become wrapped around the kitten or a kitten could become trapped inside causing suffocation or strangulation.Electrical, phone cords, and dangling drapery cords are an invitation to strangulation or electrocution.Open toilet lids: cats love to drink out of toilet bowls, so it's wise to use a one part bleach to 30 parts water disinfectant.Rockng chairs, reclining chairs and hide-a-beds have mechanisms that can easily crush a kitten who has crawled inside or break bonesOpen refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, ovens, washers, and dryers are intriguing places to hide and sleep. Check for kittens before shutting or turning on any appliance! Keep your workshop off limits. Cats will jump at moving objects such as drills and power saws. They may also swallow screws, nails, wire, and other small parts. Keep all cleaning products and chemicals stored away and out of reach. Anything with phenyl is deadly to cats (this includes Lysol). Remember, kittens lick their paws, so be careful what you use on Cats love certain scents, and one of their favorites is antifreeze. Antifreeze is deadly, if your kitten should get into anti-freeze and you discover it in time, RUN to the nearest vet or emergency clinic.
