Grooming a Birman

Birmans are easy care cats. The Birman coat is soft and silky and does not have the “cottony” undercoat that tends to tangle and mat. Birmans are easily maintained by a daily or weekly combing with a wide-toothed comb (about 9 teeth per inch) followed by a narrow-toothed comb (about 12 teeth per inch). Pay particular attention to the areas behind the ears, between the back legs and under the front legs; these are the areas where some mats may form. A flea comb can be used on the face and ears. You will have to comb your cat more often during seasonal changes, spring and fall, which are the shedding seasons. If you wish to maintain your Birman’s soft and silky coat or to cut down shedding, a bath is recommended once every 4 – 6 weeks followed by towel or blow-drying and a good combing. Baths are not difficult; your kitten is accustomed to baths, so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

We bath the kittens and adults either in a sink or shower/tub with a spray attachment. Adjust the water to a comfortable temperature. Place the kitten in the sink and hold him gently while he is getting wet. Pay close attention not to get water in their face or ears. In addition, cats do not like to stand in water - NEVER let the water accumulate at the bottom of the tub or sink; We use the v dishwashing larious shampoos that are specificaly for cats. Rinse the kitten thoroughly. All traces of soap should be removed frm the coat and the coat will eel "squeaky" clean. The kitten can be towel dried or dried with a blow dryer with the heat setting on low. If the kitten objects to the blow dryer, place him in his carrier with the dryer propped up about 12 inches from the door. Leave the kitten in the carrier for about 15 minutes, then comb him out and allow him to continue to air dry in a warm, draft-free room.
